Epi's Manxter Build

Postby Epimetheus » 24 Sat May, 2008 12:48 am

I've been planning a Manxter buggy ever since I saw Olli's in Kit Car magazine. As I'm sure a lot of y'all know though, planning and actually doing are two completely separate things. Well last weekend I picked up my first part, a Porsche 915 transaxle. The first part really brings the project into reality.

A quick rundown of what I've got in mind:

Chassis - David Barrett chassis (Will be in my garage on Sunday)

Engine - Subaru 2.0L or 2.5L tubro, JDM, not sure on the source yet

Transaxle - Porsche 915/61 out of a 1979 911SC

Body - Meyers Manxter with side pods

Beyond that I haven't really nailed anything down. I'm got some really crazy ideas, especially electrical, but that's for another post. I get some pictures of the transaxle posted later. In the meantime I've started a Flickr collection covering my progress:

Great! glad to see another build starting.

Are you the one that bought one of Dave's pans this weekend? I saw he sold one to someone starting a buggy.

My chassis was on his trailer. Quite an awesome chassis too. I am very impressed with the quality. I'll get some pictures of it and the Porsche tranny posted soon.

That's a great starting point, beats the heck out of dealing with a 40 year old rusty pan.

That was exactly my goal in getting the custom chassis. My family has worked on several project cars in the last few years and learned a few things. We built a '67 Shelby Cobra replica based on a tubular chassis. We partially restored a '74 Mercury Comet. I know you're asking yourself "Who restores a Comet?" It was my mom's first car so there was some sentimental attachment. We eventually sold it half finished and bought an '06 Mustang GT. We also restored a '76 CJ5 Jeep for a friend. The Cobra taught me the advantage of working with everything new. You just have the tear down and clean up phase. You get to jump right into assembly.
