Hill country cruise

Postby Jack Duncan » 13 Sun Sep, 2009 11:43 pm

Folks, I like the idea of a 400 mile cruise. Maybe from Comfort out one day or 200 miles (easy to do) ending at Comfort. Next morning out a different direction another 200 miles. I've covered 200 miles in the hill country on a Harley in one day. It doesn't take all day either. What are some thoughts? If the first day ends at the same spot you don't have to lug so much stuff along. :)

Jack,
I like the loop idea better. I know it might be a problem finding some place to park the trailers for the weekend. But staying some where different the second night can stretch the area out the you can see.

We used to do the same thing on the Mena cruise.. We would leave Antlers Okla on a Saturday morning and stop over night in Mena Arkansas. Than return by a different route the following day. Again that causes the problem of parking trailers over night.

But I thinkl it is do-able.

My goal would be to work out a route that would be a continous loop around the Hill Country, and part of the planning will have to include finding a place to spend the night somewhere about mid route.

A sweep vehicle will likewise need to part of the plan.

I'm also kicking around some ideas about how to handle a really bad weather forecast just prior to the departure date.

Here's one idea: If a designated weather service (say National Weather Service) has a 60% or greater chance of rain at 8:00 am of the Friday before the Saturday of departure, then the event would be automatically called. Times, percentages of rain, etc could be varied, but that would be the format for deciding whether or not to go forward.

That's just one idea of several possibilities.

Other's thoughts :?:

I like the idea of a two day loop; a little more adventure.

Like you said, a sweeper is mandatory. Not only for sweep but to carry some luggage! Finding a sucker...er...I mean volunteer for a cruise that long/expensive could be a major hurdle.

Trailer parking; we would have to find some place and get permission from the parking lot/land owner.

When are you thinking about doing this? Spring break maybe?

I never thought about the sweep carrying the luggage. That sounds good to me. The loop idea I mean. I can see where this would be tons of fun. Let's get'ur done. Spring break is a good idea too. My wife is fired up and ready to go.:)

Just have to talk my better half into it (she's not a big fan of the really long rides)

What do mean, call it off for a little rain? If we did that there would never be a buggy event

Amen to that,, Don't forget Russell and Christie Hebert. Their not afraid of getting wet. We both got soaked in Salado..

If we stop because of a little rain, we might not every have another buggy ride.

If it rains, Will just have more Sweepers than Buggies.

here are recent pics of our trip to talimena - 500 miles in 2 days. i might be able to arrange for everyones parking in antlers. if ya'll dont mind - if my dad goes he will need to stop ever so often to stretch due to bad circulation in legs. we know of very neat things to see by taking back roads meaning gravel and dirt roads. we have really neat pics so if some one can send some directions on how to post it would be appreciated[/img]

Linda is likewise not a big fan of really long rides, so I'll probably solo this one. But, I know she will wish me well. :D :D :D

My Two Cents Worth

Postby Rick&Cyndi M » 15 Tue Sep, 2009 6:59 pm

Spring Break could be a disadvantage because school districts take different weeks off, and because the kids will be out of school and many vacations are taken then. Also, taking the kids on a 400 mile cruise could get very whiney. We would like to suggest a parents break, perhaps from Uncle Sam, around April 15th. Mid April - 16th, 17th, 18th.

If we could end up in Hunt, TX (17 miles from Kerrville on Hwy 39) after the first cruise, we would offer free overnight accomodations for 8-14 people plus free home cooked dinner and breakfast for everyone the next morning. Trailer, camper, and motor home parking is also available. There are plenty of nearby B&B's and motels as well.

We could leave Hunt the next day and loop to Leakey, Vanderpool (Lost Maples State Park), Medina and back several ways to Comfort. This loop is approximately 200 miles and beautiful Hill Country.

Mid April would be awfully close to the Tx VW Classic :(

Might consider doing it in conjunction with the Classic. Have the long cruise end in Fredericksburg for the Sunday show day. Just a thought.

Postby matter396 » 15 Tue Sep, 2009 9:06 pm

I'm in if I get the buggy done. If not I already got reservations for the classic and would be happy to be a sweep. That sounds like alot of fun!!!
