Roundup - General

Postby Bill K » 01 Sat Aug, 2009 2:51 pm

Johnny Bridges (Buggy Man John) has very graciously donated one of his awesome steering columns as a prize for our Poker Run on Sunday's Cruise.

That was very generious of him, and I really appreciate his support of the the Buggy Roundup.

The folks over at Hot Spark have likwise graciously donated one of their pointless ingnition kits for the Poker Run.

So, it looks like we'll have to play Hi - Lo Poker. The best high hand and the best low hand wins. That is, unless "Bryan the Dealer" thinks of something else.

Would anyone else want to lead the Parade this year?

I have the signs made and they will be the same as last year, except in blue. They are on paper that has to be taped with double-sided tape since for some reason tape won't stick to the front. About 25' or so of double sided tape will be needed.

Because of how the signs are made it will probably need to be a buggy with side pods.

If we will be two abreast, I don't mind being up there with you. My car doesn't have paint to worry about, so tape won't hurt anything. But Bill, you're the man! If someone wants to ride during the parade, I have a rear seat also. Maybe to help Pinkie throw candy. :) :)

I graciously accept your nomination, and promise to serve honorably. :D

Actually, it will be an honor for Linda and I to lead such a fine group of people and cars.

I hope to be receiving the parade instructions this week, and as soon as I get them I'll post them up.

I'm really looking forward to seeing you all.

PARADE:
Following are our instructions for the parade:

We gather at E. Advogt Street. The parade is scheduled to start at 10:00 am, and they ask that we be at our spot at 9:00 am, but judging by last year I think as late as 9:30 could work.

Our entry is #66 which I think is the same as last year, and I think our assigned gathering spot is also the same as last year.

Don't forget the goodies to throw to the kids.

POKER RUN:
I just got word from Dino with Bug Shields that he wants to again donate one of his buggy windshields as a prize for our Cruise Poker Run. The only thing he asked is that it be a standard size (Up to 43.75" width x 16" glass). There would have to be an upcharge for non-standard sizes.

This is Dino's second year to support the Roundup in such a generous way.

SO:
The Poker Run prizes are:

Steering Column by Buggy Man John
Pointless Ignition Kit by Hot Spark
Buggy Windshield by Dino

The Natives know we are coming :) :)

I worked up a press release about the Buggy Roundup and Jack was kind enough to take it over to the local newspaper (The Boerne Star) for me.

The story ran in their August 18th issue and here is a link to it:

Bill, nice job with the press release. That should be good for a few thousand more spectators. ;-)
After that write up you may have to extend the “Show & Tell” hours.

Bill,

We just read the article on the Roundup (great job), but we did have one question:

Noticed that the cruise is to be approximately 150 miles. Did Bryan intentionally plan it this far to insure a buggy breakdown so he could get rid of that trophy he's been displaying so proudly since last year? After 150 miles if no Buggy has been loaded on the sweep trailer will he be extending the cruise?

P.S.: Bryan said he would be glad to inspect any unattended buggys for potential problems.

You nailed it Billy. Bryan's plan was 150 miles, and if no one broke down he was going to just keep driving until someone won the Doom Buggy Award.

Seriously, Bryan and I had a cruise route we were looking at that was about 150 or more miles long. That's where the 150 miles in the article came from.

However, after some thought we decided that a 150+ mile cruise may be a bit much for man & machine, especially if the temperatures stay like they have been.

Bryan has laid out a great route that should end up being about 85 - 100 miles and he has promised to quit even if the Doom award is still his.

Bryan is among the best VW mechanics I've known, but you are right, everyone should be advised not to let him near their engine right before cruise time. I'm kinda worried that Staggerwing may fall victim with an offer from Bryan to cure his plug fouling problem. :D :D

I'll be watchin you VERY closely Brian 8-)

I can't stand it anymore. Been waiting for this Honda Bond stuff around the cylinders to cure (supposed to wait three days @ 77 degrees) but I figure 2 days at a hundred and whatever degrees, should be good enough

Is anyone going to have an empty seat for the parade?

A good friend of mine has a 14 year old grandaughter living in Boerne, and she would be on cloud nine to get to ride in a dune buggy in the parade.

EARLY BIRD SCREEN PORCH SOCIAL

The Porters, Blairs, Duncans, and Kneseks are hosting a get together Friday night at 7:00 pm at the Meyer B&B in Comfort.

Sweets, snacks, and sodas, will be on the table.

So, if you are in town early and are so inclined, we'd love to have you come on over and join us. It should be a good time of getting acquainted, visiting, and telling lies. :)

I want to thank everyone that came out for the Roundup. You all helped made it another memorable event for me.

Linda and I decided to stay another night at the Meyer B&B, but I'm already planning for next year and hope to incorporate some great ideas I got from some of you at Roundup III.

Yes indeed, it's a secret, but trust me ;-) , you are going to like it.

Also, as per a suggestion, the "Points of Interest" for the Cruise will be handed out at Saturday's Show & Tell instead of just as we leave for the Cruise. I thought that was a great suggestion.

Another suggestion came from Gloria Blair. She suggested that the last buggy in the Parade have a sign about us being at the Plaza in the afternoon, and that also is a GREAT idea that will be used.

One more suggestion would be to have the Sunday evening dinner catered at the Meyer B&B. Not my idea but I believe a good one.

After what happened at El Rio, I am definitely looking at other options for the Sunday dinner.

I all but begged the guy for separate checks and he all but insisted it would be impossible. and then when things went badly with the large single check (which he said was the only way we could go), to have him tell some of our folks that it was my fault for "asking" for a single check did not set very well at all with me. :x :x

really sad that i missed all the fun guys but hopefully i can make it next year and hopefully the buggy will be in working order by then. Was broke this time around and had to stay home and help out with a garage sale to make some money. Oh and BTW if any of y'all are down in kerrville this year swing on by my shop. can always use another eye and set of hands.

Bill,

We really enjoyed the handout. One suggestion, if possible, would be to include a map. I could help to draw it if needed.

As for El Rio, did the money come out OK? I was a little concerned about that.

Again, thanks for putting on a great weekend. We are already looking forward to next year.
