Eliminate torsions...use coilovers?

These buggies are light and bouncy with the stock stuff. Is it feasible to remove the torsion innards and use external coilover shocks? Is this a stupid question?

You can't remove the torsions, due to the fact that they hold the arms on, in the front!
If at first you don't succeed, beat the pshaw out of the business partner, and then go at it alone! LOL!

Then what do you do to soften the front to compensate for the lack of weight?

You can remove sections of the tortion springs (but leave the ends and the middle all there). Brazing the ends and the middle together will require work, but it is a can do. Make sure you don't allow this to make any of the cross sections larger, and then slide the springs back in and reinstall the parts.
Watch out for the heat, though, you don't want to get the strength out of the springs.

You can remove the torsion springs and run a through rod, then you can use the coil-overs.
