Engine timing

Postby Buzzfagan » 31 Sun Jul, 2016 10:07 am

I am just getting my 1600 dp engine ready (for my Manx style) to start up soon and researching how to best get it timed correctly and properly tuned.
Just to keep in mind I will probably eventually do some upgrades to get it more powerful.

I am looking into timing lights, test bulbs, etc. What is the best timing light for me to buy? Best test bulb? Are there any other tools or gadgets that I should purchase to make my engine run as best as possible for now and in the future when I upgrade the engine?

If you don't already, I highly recommend this book by John Muir "How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive: A Manual of Step-by-Step Procedures for the Compleat Idiot." Link to Amazon.com listing.

Not only is it extremely helpful, it's also an entertaining read. This will walk you through the timing procedure, basic tune up, valve adjusting and so much more.

I have the cheap HF timing light and it work just fine for me. Watch the tail pipes, they melt the leads quickly.
