Herb's Engine Question

Postby Bill K » 06 Wed Jun, 2012 5:48 pm

Herb is having trouble uploading photos to the Forum so I'm trying from my album. He has a question about being able to grind away a bit of the engine block. The photo below shows where he wants to grind. Hopefully, someone can help him out.

I see one. The arrow points to the area he needs to grind.

Why does he want to grind that away?

Because the filter pump won't seat all the way with that little nub there and oil blows all over the place.

When I had a filter pump, before going to a full flow system, I had to grind VERY LITTLE in that area to get the filter pump to seat.
I think the place Herb has marked is where I ground, but it's been so long ago that I hate to say for sure.

Maybe one of our engine guys can help here?

I have ground away there also but grind as little as needed.
Are you changing the pump or just the cover .
The pump with the filter and a pump without a filter are not the same.

Thanks Bill for posting this picture. I have a new oil pump & filter combination. That round area on the block hits the oil filter bracket. Looks like I need to grind close to 1/4" off of the block. My concern is, Is there any oil flow ports behind this spot?
Also, I bought a new oil cooler that is the late model external type. So, I guess I need a new fan cover with the slot for the cooler. Does any one have an extera fan cover?
Thank you all for the help.

Is the new pump in the engine case if not check the thickness of the new pump to see
if it thicker and would give you more room for filter.

Make absolute sure you change the pump housing with that filter over. The pumps are not the same......

And that little round boss is just for mounting the engine in a bus. You can grind a 1/4" inch off easy.
