Transmission

Postby Russhebert » 04 Sun Mar, 2012 8:19 am

I went to get the buggy out of the trailer because it has been in there since the christmas parade and what I found was not good. There is a large puddle of oil on the floor right under the nose on the trans. The whole under side of everything is covered in oil. It seems to be coming from around the nose or the rear mount. I am talking about where the shift rod hooks up ( that area). This has to be something that happened sudden because I was under the car getting it ready for the Christmas parade and it was clean. Any thoughts on what might have happened. I know the trans has to probably come out but I thought I might ask so maybe I would know what to be looking for.

If you haven't run it since the parade and everything is covered in oil it must have happened during the parade?

I know there is a vent in the nosecone and I think there is a gasket under the cone as well.

Are you sure it's the transmission and not engine oil?

I don't see how engine oil would have got all the way up to the shift tube.

Russell,

Went out and look at my buggy. The 3 plugs are there....they're small (#6 on drawing.)
Couldn't get a picture of them. Looks like maybe a small allen wrench might work (at least on mine).
Mine is a '73 IRS and has teh plugs as pictured.

I did find this picture in my Bentley manual. Front of car/trans is right side of picture. Plugs are on passenger side partially hidden by frame horns.

I haven't been able to look at it because I have a back problem. Hopefully I will be able to get it fixed before Fredericksburg.

Well your guess is as good as mine. I brought the car home and looked all around everything and could not determine where the oil was coming from. Wiped everything off and drove the car about 200 miles this weekend and it had no leak at all. I guess it will remain a mistery. Thanks for all your help.

Hey Russell, BEWARE, if there is no oil under your car you may have a FAKE VW engine or transmission . :D :D
