OK so I need a flywheel............

Postby mwh986 » 23 Thu Dec, 2010 12:06 pm

So there I am with my project buggy in parts, and while I'm poking around, I peer throught the starter opening in the tranny, and realize I'm sans flywheel!

No biggie right!

But I do have a few questions:

*If I buy a flywheel with 8 pins, will it work with a stock 4 pin crank shaft?
*In addtion to the flywheel purchase I will need
*Gland nut and washer?
* 4 pins?
*Flywheel shims? and how does one determine the proper application of the shims?

I'll also put in a new clutch, plate and throw out bearing, but what else?

Thank,

Mark

8 hole flywheel will work with a 4 pin crank. You can drill 4 more holes in your crank for the extra pins but isnt needed for a stock engine.
New gland nut and washer are good insurance and comes with a new input shaft bearing. Dont forget to add a little grease to the bearing.
New shims arent always needed but it wouldnt hurt to have extras. To set your endplay you'll need a dial indicator or the special tool thats sold at any vw parts house. I set mine .003 to .005 anything more than .006 and it will knock and damage the bearing and block.Anything less than .003 and it will damage the thrust bearing and posible sieze the engine.
It's EASY.... if you know how.
