How to shorten shifter rod????

I have a 64 that i have cut down to fit my buggy body but i don,t know where along the shifter rod to make my cut to shorten it????? thanks

Mine was shortened @ the rear coupler and brased together. it needs to be a good clean weld so it will slide thru the nylon bushing @ the front.
It's EASY.... if you know how.

Was yours a 64 the rod has bends in it and no straight part on the shaft that is 14 inch long except up front right where the shifter is inserted...

I took a straight edge and scored a line along the side of mine. Used a tubing cutter to cut a nice section out. Lined up the scored lines and welde it back up

Cory is right on track, even better if ya can find a piece of tubing or cold rolled steel to slip inside that fits tight to add strength to it before welding up.

On mine I ground the weld off from the front cup section that the shifter goes in too then cut the shaft to the appropriate length and reweld the front piece back on. Doing it this way you don't have to worry about grinding the weld perfectly smooth as the weld doesn't need to slide through the bushing.
