jumping in first gear

Postby jtc442 » 09 Tue Mar, 2010 6:32 am

Just got my buggy last weekend. Everything is fine except for taking off in first gear. It jumps and bucks really loud and hard! It doesnt come out of gear though, and if I take off really slow, its fine, but If I try to take off normal it sounds like its gonna jump out of the buggy? What could it be? i apologize in advance if this is already posted. all other gears are fine.

Sounds like the Bowden tube:

Could also be the front tranny mount.

I'm in Keller, just north of ft worth. I'm bought a bowden tube today, but, whoever built this buggy, cut out the front part that the tube fits in. I have the bracket on tranny, but that's it. So how can just that tube cause it to do that?

You need to get that tube fixed. You can sleeve some tube over the existing tube to make it work. That bend in the Bowden tube is what prevents the shudder.

If you put solid mounts in you don't need the tube. The tube is in there to allow the motor and trans to move on the rubber mounts when you take off in first gear so use solid mounts and no movement no need for the tube.

I agree with Bryan, I cut my tube shorter so it doesn't have as much bow, with solid mounts I didn't need it, and it just made it harder to depress the pedal with all the friction.

but with the tube not there, or whatever, does it just slightly shudder? mine honestly sounds like its going to come out of the buggy!!! once rolling, as long as i dont give it gas to go, i can step on it and it is fine, no slipping, popping, or anything!! just getting going is the prob.

ok, a little update. i put it in gear and rolled it back and forth, and yes, the front mount by the nose cone was loose. it moved up about .5 to 1 inch when i rocked it back and forth. i tightened it down, but wont know if that helped until i make something for the bowden tube to fit in on the front side, since i already removed the old clutch cable. think that could have been part of my problem??

I had the exact same problem on my buggy, nosecone of the tranny moved up and down and it slammed around in 1st gear take off. I tightened up the front trans mount and it worked perfectly-And- it was free, I'd definitely try that 1st. JMO, Fred

I have the bowden tube, I didn't know it would work with out it!! If its not jumping out of gear tightening the trans mounts will probably fix it. Before I found the loose mount I thought there was something seriously wrong with the car. When I let the clutch out it would bang hard and if I idled in 1st it would rock and bang when i gave or let off the gas, Sound familiar?

Most sounds familiar. When letting out the clutch, bangs hard, but idling in first, no problem at all once clutch is fully released?
