Any hood mounting tips?

Postby garthom » 15 Sat Mar, 2008 11:26 am

Looking for ideas how to fasten down hood permanently, with details. Hood fits tight at front, gap in middle and tight at rear. How does front of hood line up with inside fenders? To fasten down, Pop rivet, metal screw, or rope? Just kiddin on rope. Any info would be great. Thanks, Gary

you mean you're not supposed to use duct tape????? NASCAR says it's good for 200mph!!! Don't they?

Actually ( and I used too many screws) mine is bloted with 10-32, big washers on both sides and lock nuts as far forward as I can reach. Then I used screws for the rest.

Make sure you can take it off when you need to ...and eventually you'll need to.

personally I am not going to do a permanent mount, as I believe in St. Murphy..and knowing that, the hood is gonna have to come off for some reason or another. Dzus Fasteners come to mind, and there's another option I discovered! I was doing a network at a truck dealership (18-wheeler type), and a technician needed to mount panels. He drilled thru both panels, and on the inner one used a tool similar to a rivet gun. It makes a threaded grommet, and it's what I'm going to use. It's called "nutserts", and it may be something you may want to consider

At Ace Hardware they sell a clip with a nut attached (I got 1/4"). I clipped those to the lip of the hood, and used 1/4" bolts with flat washers though the fender. I think I used 3 on each side. Makes removing the hood easy.
Also some JB Weld added to the clips helps keep them in place.
You might want to consider using some fender welting between the fender and hood to help hide the differance in space.

I used the nutserts and stainless screws/washers to mount mine as well. You can just see them in this picture:

I also used them to mount my body to the frame. They are really very handy.
