OK before I get to far into this, and can't turn back. Does anyone know what you have got to have, or don't have to have in order to get your Buggy Titled/ Registered/ Insured? I had a dream last night, that I finished building my Buggy after a year and a Half, and had to change all kinds of pshaw before I could put it on the road. ( :o It looked AWESOME BY THE WAY! )

I have the same question.

Last time I had plates on mine was in '82. Things were simpler back then.

Didn't have to have insurance back in the '70s. Now we do.

My title is for a '61 VW. Will that work now or is a constructed vehicle or something of that nature needed for a new title.

Also, need to find an insurance carrier as my homeowner/vehicle carrier will not insure my buggy. Insurance is needed before I try to get tags.

So what hoops do we need to jump now to get street legal.

Was going to ask this after this weekend was over, but since Faron brought it up, thought I would jump on this also.

I know what it needs to pass inspection and again, that is insurance plus the working items mentioned by buggyryan. After that a title. Will the VW title work?

Hope to get the paper work out of the way before restoration is completed.

Thanks.

I think the easiest way is to get a buggy titled is to use a stock VW one..either the one from the donor chassis, or get a salvage one and register that...

harder, would be to register it as a 'kit' car.. harder to insure that way too..

for inspection (in Texas) ,

1. Horn
2. Windshield Wipers (if windshield is installed)
3. Mirrors (minimum of 2, side or rear)
4. Steering (if powered)
5. Seat Belts
6. Brakes (system) (Parking -- beginning with 1960 models)
7. Tires (tread life)
8. Wheel Assembly
9. Exhaust System
10. Exhaust Emission System (beginning with 1968 models)
11. Beam indicator (beginning with 1948 models)
12. Tail Lamps (2); (1) if 1959 model or earlier
13. Stop Lamps (2); (1) if 1959 model or earlier
14. License Plate Lamp
15. Rear Red Reflectors (2)
16. Turn Signal Lamps (beginning with 1960 models)
17. Head Lamps (2) (lo's and high's)
18. Motor, Serial, or Vehicle Identification Number
19. 1988 & newer - inspect for window tinting or coating

remember, especially for people who build like me (looow to the ground) "Every head lamp upon every motor vehicle shall be located at a height of not more than 54 inches nor less than 24 inches"

I think the emmissions is for Houston and Dallas, and some guidelines for checking include:

1. Exhaust leak
2. Lamps are not securely mounted and properly located.
3. Lamps do not emit required color lens or bulb painted.
4. Visibility requirements are not met.
5. Lenses are cracked, broken, discolored, or missing.
6. Wiring insulation is worn, rubbed bare, or shows any evidence of burning, short circuiting, or poor electrical connections.
7. Lens is cracked or broken to the extent that a portion of the lens is missing and/or separated, permitting light from the bulb to emit through the crack or break.
you must have pride....in your ride....

I am bringing this back to the top in regards to titleing a DB and insurance.

How many Texas buggy owners have their buggies registered as the VW that was used to provide the pan for the buggy?

What insurance companies will provide basic insurance at a reasonable price? What kind of info do they need in regards to the buggy? I do have the original title to the VW used to make my buggy.

I want to have an idea of what kind of responses I need to make to keep from getting turned down. Do you provide info based on the VW or the dune buggy? Name of auto, etc, etc.

I know I need insurance before I can even think about getting plates and an inspection sticker. So insurance will be my first quest.

Your help would be appreciated. Thanks.

GregR

Thanks for the info. I didn't think about doing a search for insurance.

This info helps.
