Corvair Motor!

Postby Faron » 22 Wed Mar, 2006 9:57 pm

As I have mentioned before my Step Dad has offered to GIVE me a Corvair motor. I have been doing some thinking, and I am really leaning towards going this route for two reasons.
1.) Because its different, you rarely see a Buggy with a Corvair motor. Not that I have seen a running Buggy in years.
2.) I talk about putting that motor in my Buggy with my Step Dad and he starts beaming with pride! On the other hand, my Dad tells me that I am a Bonehead...BlaBlaBla
If I choose to go with the Corvair Motor will it be harder to show it?

Neal O ran a corvair for many years...til it blew up. Corvairs are fine. There'll be an awesome MAnx at the Buggy Blast with a corvair engine....he's coming from Arizona. There a several guys on the RBC Forums that have Corvair power (they call it the dark side) and no, it won't be harder to show. 8-)

I just do not see how the VW motor is a more economical way to go with my situation. I mean the motor is free, and look at what this guys has to say....the more I look into this the more I think the Corvair motor is the way to go

You can either use the complete corvair power train or you can put the
corvair motor up to a vw transaxle with the adaptor we have, the
adaptor kit
to do this would run about $500-$800. the corvair motor will cost
between
$1200- $2500 in parts to completely go through to put back in new
condition.
We have all of the parts that you will need to do this.

yeah, i'm personally going to do the VW Type 1 engine, due to the ease, and availability of parts... if it breaks down, EVERYONE knows how to help out in fixing it..

a corvair? i've only SEEN one, not worked on one..

but freee is freee, right?

besides, at 75 mph, it takes me 4 HOURS DRIVING NORTH to get to san antonio...you ARE NOT in south Texas! lol
you must have pride....in your ride....

Corvair?

Postby Hawk » 28 Tue Mar, 2006 7:52 am

Faron, If you are going to use the corvair engine you will need to use the corvair trans also. Or you will have 4 reverses and one forward gear. VW engine turns clockwise and Corvair turns CCW. You can flip the ring gear in a swing axle trans but I haven't fliped one in an IRS trans. I hope this helps with your idea.

An other idea, is to use the reverse grind kit for the corvair engine, and it will run the same direstion as the VW. This would help out with the thrust loads commonally found in the transmissions. It would REALLY help to put the four spider differential into the trans just to keep the thing from exploding, when you hammer it.
