registering rail buggy as 75 vw bug

Postby bickgibbs » 14 Sat Jan, 2006 1:37 pm

I have a rail buggy that I have built, but I want to use my 1975 bug title and vin number to register it in Texas. Does anyone know the proper procedure for doing this?

thats a good question I would start here with the dept of public safety
http://www.dmv.org/tx-texas/vehicle-registration.php
and ask what is required for inspection/registration.
the DMV is pretty easy going as far as tags and plates. mine is regestered
as a 1969 beetle also. but thats not the wright way to do it
you shuld probobly go for assembled vehicle if you can. that makes it easer to sell in the future but is a pretty good work out on the front end.
the two problem areas are insurance and inspection.
inspection is pretty straight forward lights blinkers
good solid roadworthy equipment
and insurance is limited to who you know in the buisness LOL
mine is regestered as a dune buggy but has limited restrictions as to its use
its with a company called
http://www.midwestclassicins.com/
they have both rails and buggys but are pretty selictive on who they cover
Ill do some research tonight and make a link/sticky on the forums
if it aint broke, break it then fix it

Don't go to the Department of Safety............You have a title and vin number aslready. I told them that I had rebuilt my Vw and thats why it was not on the road. As long as you have insurence when you go in there it should not be a p roblem.

A vehicle inspection and proof of insurance is neeeeeeeeeeeeded, I believe! First, get insurance on it, as the inspection station is gonna ask it for ya, get the inspection, to show that is up to snuff, then take those results to the registrar, it makes it a tad easier..

I would listen to Neal, if you get insurance on the car as a car, you can get the plates, then go for the inspection......if you try to go the route that the State wants, you will be having a huge pain in the @#@%$#. They want you to have all kinds of stuff you don't need and they don't ask for, the the departments do not talk to each other and you will be going on a merry go round until you puke!!!!!!!
Once the car or rail has plates, and an inspection sticker.....no one will give you grief when you go to sell the car!
Just trying to register the car my mom left me when she died.....could not be done because the state office in Austin had the car still listed as reprossed. This was after the car dealership had taken it back and sold it a year before.......and after the car had been reregistered in Ill. for a year!
Your state government dollars at work!!!!!
If at first you don't succeed, beat the pshaw out of the business partner, and then go at it alone! LOL!

Here's a thought...

For you folks that live in a big city....

Can you post your insurance company and agent? Maybe we can even get a group rate for insurance!!! Tell them you're gonna post it on the internet forum, many more clients are coming in, so give us all a discount! yay! :!:

what is the going rate for insurance on a buggy.

I figured I'd lie and use the vin as a bug and insure it as such for a bigger discount than a kit car or god forbid an exotic.

the downside of telling the insurance it's a Beetle is that they drop you or at least deny your claim. My insurance has pictures, etc and know exactly what they're insuring.

How did you register your buggy with the beetle title?

It is still registered as a beetle. The Title is a beetle. Get your insurance first. Then go down and register the beetle title, get your plates, Stamp the VIN number on the chassis. Now go get inspection. Since the VIN number on the chassis and insurance card is a '75 VW. Now you just have to get a safty inspection.
