Upholstery ???

Postby Bill K » 01 Sun Jan, 2006 11:17 pm

Has anyone upholstered the inside sides of their buggy? I am considering doing so, and could use some ideas and tips.

I bet if you call a auto upholstery shop they could give you some great information. My brother called and they guy sold him the headliner material. Just look them up in the yellow pages, or at least that's what I would do! :D

sorry it took me soooo long to get back with ya on this
I did the inside of mine in two ways
the first was to make paterns of the side walls with paper then take them over to a sheet of backer board you know the brown stuff like peg board
but dont use pegboard too holy (LOL you might want to do some naughty things in there when shes done lol)
then cut out the board and trial fit till you like it
sand all the edges smooth and straight. thats the tricky part
then applie some spray glue cover with 1/8 foam
cut edges then spray glue again and cover with what ever you want vinal fabric ECT ECT just wrap it around the edges
be sure to pre cut and mark evrything before gluing to make sure you have enough room to fold bend and tuck

now for the back I used glue foam glue foam glue and covering
that piece is permenant if I take it off its dun
but the side pieces I could pull off if needed they are held on by liquid nail
adhisve but I have also seen the panles held on by upohlstry clips that go in before the foam but require drilling holes in the body for them to pop into

its all up to you with the foam you can use multilayers and make designes
say like flames LOL I like flames can you tell
let me know if I can help more

Thanks so much, for the info on how you did your car, Blackthree4me.
Did you do anything special where the top of your panels are attached to the body. That is, seal to keep out water, or roll over slightly onto the the top edge of the body, or put a piece of beading between the panel and the body :?: ?

my cage is so tight it covers that area but the back seat area is wide open to the elements I would sugest putting in fender beading that is attached to the backer board
great question!

I'm just like you about taking my car out in the rain. However, I like to go multi-day cruisin', so sometimes I have gotten caught off guard.
Just would like to prepare for all contingencies.
Fender welting is exactly what I was thinking. I was glad to hear you suggest the same.

I once told you that I would find out information about Upholstery. Well a cool little company came i n to the dealership a couple of days ago. I asked her if she could do fun & exciting looks to just about anything. Her husband is the guy that is the custom upholstery guy. She said no job is to big or to small for him. I even asked her if he could do the raised flames. They want to re-skin the seats in my MINI, we are talking about doing Black & White Leather with red stitching. I am sure she can get you anything you need. All you need to get in touch with her is bellow.

Thanks Faron. I'll check them out. I'm already talking to another guy in San Antonio that I met at the Boerne car show, so someone else won't hurt. His work was nice, but still don't have a price. (Wow ! Poetry)
