update

Postby Texasbuggys » 01 Tue Jan, 2008 8:29 pm

Ok, I did get a bit of time today to fit the rear wall. Weather has been less then the best except for a few days and had to rebuild a gate. Whew, now that is out the way I did fit the rear wall late this afternoon before it got to cold. Darn wind has been gusting 25 mph today. Supposed to get really cold tonight. Anyways, picked up the sheet metal and trimmed to fit. Will frame it up, trim the top section and fit it then weld it all up. Most of the original VW roof that is rolled down will be chopped off and bended into the new rear wall. Then cut in a rear window and close it up with glass.

truck

Postby Texasbuggys » 02 Wed Jan, 2008 8:01 pm

Hey guys, I am looking for a rear window sheet metal clip with glass that somebody wants to get rid of that is fairly small but not to much as it is not a chopped top truck. I need to get a back window for the truck so I can brace the rear wall up before welding the rear wall skin on. I just need a window that will go in a flat rear wall. Perfer something close or that can be shipped by bus to save on shipping cost.

thanks

Postby Texasbuggys » 06 Sun Jan, 2008 10:03 pm

Thank you Chris as always and also thanks for the fenders, lets me move forward. I sat one up and did some checking and here is where I am.

Ok worked on rough setting up of the bed and I am not diggin the length of the space between the rear of the cab and the front of the back fender. I think I am going to cut about 8"-10" out of that section of the chassis and bed and put it back together. I have to keep the distance from the rear fender back to cover the Ford 2.3 going back there. Let me know what you guys think. The VW fenders will be widened about 4" in the back and 11.5" in the front narrow section to fill the taper that the VW body has and give me enough width to cover the 15.5" wide tires out back.

I also have a friend in Ohio that is going to hook me up with an early Mondo bus rear hatch and window, can't wait to get it dried in!!!

update

Postby Texasbuggys » 14 Mon Jan, 2008 9:59 pm

Ok, could not stand the long looking wheelbase as shown in the first picture so did some measurements and came up with a need to shorten the frame 18.5" so did a photo-chop and here we are. I am very pleased with the photo-chop picture so when the weather clears up, chop chop fizz fizz of what a shorter wheelbase it will be.

Bobby, have you considered a 40 ford hood and fender setup? You could even add the split windshield.

little progress

Postby Texasbuggys » 20 Sun Jan, 2008 8:05 pm

Chopped the frame 18.5", then fitted a rear tire up so I could measure for the fenders. Thanks Chris Wagner for the fender hook up, after I looked at the fenders closer and after seeing how much welding they were about to get, I did not want to butcher some good fenders so the lemonator fenders are being resurrected, and modified alot! Darn grinding old bondo from the fenders just plain old stinks. I think it looks pretty close to the photo chop version now and much better than the long wheel base I started with.
Original wheelbase, yep I agree to long.
Image
New wheelbase
Image
Another view just cuz, front 30" tires look tiny, but they have 33" replacements waiting to go on. I am going to lower the bed sides a bit and add the angled bed cap with the tube running the length of the bed to give it a more classic bed look.
Image
Here is where I started with the fitting of the lemonator fenders
Image
And after grinding the bondo away on the lemonator fenders, chopping, cutting, fitting and welding, we have the start of one wide fender to cover those big ole 15.5" meats called tires.
Image
This part was not alot of fun, the compound curves are not to much excitment but it is coming out pretty good and covers the tire setup nicely.

OK who are we giving up?

Postby Texasbuggys » 16 Sat Feb, 2008 3:57 pm

Who are we going to give up to the weather gods to give us a spree of great weather? Man I have had a streak of bad luck, fridge went out Thursday night, three months out of warranty! There goes a little less than 2K, then the thing that provides a hot shower, oh yea the hot water heater gas controller took a dump, about 9 years old. Found the parts, $90.00, get it here right now, expedited. Oh it is a 5 day wait for that part and none in the state of Texas! OMG, ok sell me a new one right now, whew, they had it, of couse last one! That will be $ 349.56. Load it and I am the heck out of here. So we now have the new fridge and new hot water heater! So much for a nice raining weekend of staying in a watching some movies! And ya can never get all that water out and bone dry its 145lbs with water, about all I can throw on my back and pasck outside. LOL, Oh well, I am about to go have me an ice cold beverage and soak my sweaty behind in a hot steamy shower until I run out of water! Because I can now! LOL

HOOD

Postby Texasbuggys » 27 Thu Mar, 2008 12:07 pm

Yep, I was checking it out to. I have been busy grinding me behind off and burning some wire on the old truck. The back wall and window is now 100% welded in. The floor is in and about 85% patch work done on heater channels. The quarter windows welds are smoothed and ready for glass templates. The bed skeleton is done but after stopping and looking at a few 65 Chevy and Model A beds I am going to re-do some of it to get more of the classic stepside bed look to it. Oh and Chris W. I took your advice and bought a pair of trailer fenders to see what the rear would look like, man it is not happening, good time saver suggestion but if you seen it you would agree, heck no they gotta go! So I am back to workiing on the massive widening of the stock Bug fenders out back. And the bench seat mounts and sliders are about done and ready to mount again, staying with the old truck look.

More fun

Postby Texasbuggys » 12 Sat Apr, 2008 9:28 pm

Weld I chopped out the bottom of the rusty heater channels and replaced it with 1/4 strap! That should do the trick and last. Boy so much rust work sure eats up the time. Anyways heres a picture ya can't see most of the work but both heater channel bottoms have beem replaced, the floor is in, I am still cutting and patching inside heater channels anywhere they don't even look a little bit ok they get chopped and new steel replaced. Sure eats up time. The bed frame is complete and I can't wait to get back on it, we have come up with something that will be pretty cool and still look like an old truck from many years ago.

bed time

Postby Texasbuggys » 13 Sun Apr, 2008 10:17 pm

Did a little work on the bed. I layed it up with sheet metal and it just did not look right and looked to much like a factory new bed so got an idea. Remember the cab will be painted with instant rust and wanted to keep it looking like an old farm truck and use what ya have so I covered the frame work in cedar planks and when it ages a bit it will look pretty good, I did not get a picture with the fender in place but it looks really good with the fender in place. I am also going to burn in a body crease like the model A beds have just to offset it and break up the large side. The fender really breaks it up a lot. I am also going to cut out a script of something and burn it into the tailgate planks. Burn off the galvanived coating on the bolts so that hold the planks on so they will rust down the boards.

Seat time

Postby Texasbuggys » 13 Sun Apr, 2008 10:18 pm

Also about have the bench seat finished up. The first try it was way to tall and the wife could barely fit but I could not even get my head in the thing, she said take a hint! So next was more chopping and cutting and now it fits perfect! And it slides really nice.
:D

And also tinkered with this one! The 220 amp stinger alternator mount ran by serpentine belt setup for the local stereo stores Bug. Motor will get lots of paint and glitz before it is over! Oh Chris !!!!!
