New project

Postby malooga » 23 Mon May, 2016 4:10 pm

Before I get a bunch of people asking why this is a project because it does appear like it is finished.
I am needing to put an auto trans in it cause I'm disabled. I bought the car out of Cali a couple years back.
It has a 2.5 subaru engine and I'm going to clean up a few of the things that need to be done while I have the body off.
I will be posting some pics of the fab work we have been doing to get the auto trans to fit.
I am putting in a bus trans from an 86 vanagon and it does not just slide in like we hoped. lol
Comments both good and bad are welcomed as are any ideas you guys might have.

Had to put a 13in wide object into an 11.5in wide area.
Found this trans in Cali and it only has about 15k miles on it.
Came out of an 86 Vanagon.

Had to really carve up the horns to make it fit.

I'm sure I'll get some sort of "you can't do that to the horns remarks".
We boxed them back in and added some support back to it. There is a 3\16 flat bar on the inside
of the horn and we used the same gauge of metal to cover that piece and fill the sides. There is also
1" angle iron running the length of the horn going past the torsion bars a bit as well for added support.

All cleaned up it looks pretty good. we have had the motor and trans mounted and it worked
out great. We had some other issues that forced us to pull the trans and motor back out and fix.
I'm buying new torsion bars and spring plates as well.

IMHO I would build a frame across the shock towers and hang the trans from the top also just a thought

Bryan, that is a good idea. The trans does "float" a little and it is really heavy.
Going to be doing some work today on the car and may address that.
Thanks

That's a sharp looking buggy for sure.
Looks like you've changed cars since you lasted posted up your project.
Finally getting back to work

That chasis mod was remarkable....you seem like a very capable fabricator! The auto trans is a neat idea. I like standard but the wife always balks at driving even though she is standard trained.
