My "new" 71 VW Super Buggy

Postby RDCII » 09 Tue Aug, 2011 7:21 am

New to site,
Lots of good info on here,
Cannot wait to meet up with yall one day and do some cruising.
Been searching for a dune buggy since I dont know when..
Finally found one. It looked pretty much done..(looked) being the word.
It was inspected when I bought it.. dont know how but it was.
So far ive changed the wires, plugs, generator, regulator, rewired entire car, brakes, new tires, new battery,
swapped over to electronic ignition. Seems this thing set somewhere for bout ten years.
Anything else Im missing, I know I need to check all the seals but as there are no leaks,
not seeing a need for it yet..
Im open to any and all suggestions,
Thanks

Thanks,
I been eyeing that event.. Working in the oilfield I really dont know if im going to be off then or not.
Only had the buggy bout 3 weeks now. I think im finally almost done with fixing all the little bugs here
and there. Had a huge charging problem that plague me for a week.
Furthest Ive droven it at a time is bout 40 miles, round trip. Everything seems ok, but I guess I need to gas
it up and just go one day for a decent drive.
Have you ever had any problems with the law bout windshield wipers?
I was curious, I dont have any. Yet it was just inspected.. not by me btw.
Im thinking of taking the cheap way out with the handcrank wiper setup.
Seeing that I dont ever plan on driving in the rain.
Seems the way to go. But till then, do they really care?? at least here in Texas?

Thanks

Thats what I kinda thought.
Maybe if I put enough eye candy on the engine they wont
even notice. But for 30 bucks the handcrank wouldnt hurt...
But can you imagine trying to drive a buggy, in the rain,
steering with one arm and wiping with the other?
After being hit with a few showers the other day while I was out,
I noticed I got more water on inside of the windshield from the rear tires
than the front had...
Real wipers wouldnt matter either.

Thanks for the responce btw.
Been lurking in this forum for a while now. Never joined cause I didnt have a buggy..(always a dream)
Now I got ahold of one. Im eager to learn...

The inspection criteria is: If you have a windshield, a wiper is required. But a windshield is not a required item.

You will find many street rails, have removable windshields with small plates that hold the inspection and registration stickers. No windshield = no requirement for wiper. I ran this way for years and never had an issue at any inspection station.

A year back or so, I fabricated a removable frame and installed laminate safety glass. Even though it's removable, I keep it on during inspection, but snap on my clamp-on manual single wiper and again never have had an inspection issue.

Welcome to the club. Hope to meet you in Boerne.

Thanks for the welcome,

Ya it has a removeable windshield and the Reg/Inspection stickers are on a small piece of plexi in the corner.
I drove once with the windshield out... didnt take long to get smacked in the face with something juicy...

Im hoping to be off and make the meet in Boerne. I follow the rigs around monitoring gas levels as they drill. Im here from when they start- till they finish.. About 25-35 days straight 7-12's. So making this meeting is not looking good.
But Ive got a few favors to call in on a few people I know that just might be off then and can cover. As it creeps closer Ill know more.

Im exicted to finally see some other buggys in person and see there own personal touch's that makes each unique.
And hearing stories of the trials and errors im sure ill learn first hand. (already torch an electronic ignitor)
Ive learned after you start the need to close one eye, cause of the twelve pack you just downed..
Its time to put the tools up for the night...

Thanks all for the welcome,

Ya Crockett is bout 13 miles down the road from me.
There are alot of decent road around here, But alot are 70 MPH with
alot of logging trucks on them.. I like 55 for cruising in without the
hassle of people riding my butt.

Thanks for the heads up bout David,
Ive seen a few NICE VW's running around Crockett,
Could that be him?

Thanks,
I know Exactly what you mean.
Took me a year and a half to find it.
Every time I find one, I would be short a grand or it was sold before I could call.
Seems more and more people are getting into lately. I know just having mine a month
I now turned a few people over from wanting one, to "im getting one...soon"
Good luck in your search.
Found mine on E-bay.... Very unexpected place

Nice looking buggy. My dad lives in kennard.....just bought a retirement house and property there a few years back. It's a beautiful drive from Houston up that way. Once My buggy gets finished, that is one of my planned trips. We will have to meet up for a cruise.

Ive tried and failed, Im to the point its best to let someone with more exp to do this.
Cannot get the timing down. I really dont have the proper tools or time at this point in the project.
So im looking for a decent mechanic to do a basic once over on it. Time it right, check the carb. ect ect.
Of course someone located somewhere near me +-200 miles around east texas. That Includes dallas If I really have to..
Ive called a few people but nothing but the run around. Any tips on people or mechanics would be awesome...
Need to know bout the ranges in prices I should expect to pay for this type of tune up..
Im located near Crockett,Tx if that helps..

Thanks,

Well I never really got time to go out and just have someone else get it running right for me, so every chance I got I researched, tried, failed, repeat and finally... I got it now. I had a 009 dizzy on there tring to get along with my new 34-3 carb. Ya they dont like each other...
So I finally got a Aircooled vac advance dizzy. Runs like a champ now. got a cheap timing light and got running pretty good. Carb still needs to be adjusted by someone other than me.. it tries to die when cold for the first min or so then it purrs at 800 rpms.
Persistence and determination paided of. I also got my clutch pedal to spring back. Wingnut was to tight. Got to take a 50 mile round trip ride yesterday, :D After almost a year now... Its almost done. or is it...Thinking of some dual mufflers system.. not sure which.

Contratulations on your progress. Will we be seeing you at the VW Classic or for sure I hope at the Buggy Blast?

You are right, 009's and 34's don't get along very well. However, a 30-31 carb mated with a 009 runs great, but you have the problem solved with the vac advance distributor.

Ya will be at the Nacogdoches show in march.. Thats only 35 miles from my house.
The Classic, Blast, and Roundup are all around 250-285 miles. If the buggy is deems it self worthy of that
far of a trip by then, Ill be there. If not, not looking good... unless I just trailer it there....

What are my options for adding a fuel gauge using a stainless steal gas tank?
Im I going to have to have someone cut into to mount a float?
Ive done some searching, and havent had much luck. I though one option was maybe
getting a gas cap with a level dip stick built in. But dunno if theyll fit, or even be accurate
cause most are made for snow mobiles..

Thanks, for any and all input. :)

K been a while since I uploaded some pictures of progress.
Added some awesome maltesse cross taillights, Got some seat covers, new Scat T shifter with the reverse lock out.
Added a set of lights on the front to act as my brights, also some new covers for the lens.
I was running outta room for all my accessories on the ignition switch, so I ran a seperate positive, and negative to some junctions boxs. Ran outta wire covers. Still gotta tidey it up some more. Got the idea from on here I believe.
Heres the eye candy.

I plan on being there. I have to get a replacement oil hose for my cooler. I was cruising bout 70 down hwy 7 coming home from the rig yesterday, and the hose blew, right behind my head.... Sucked to say the least. I was completly blinded by smoke and oil on the windshield. I manage to turn it off immeditatly and safely pulled over. By passed the cooler and made it home. Cannot belive this line broke. Its split perfectly around in half, The SS covering was fine... odd to say the least. Im thinking the sharp ends of the Braided line got pushed down cutting the line with the clamp. not sure though...
Anyways.... What time is everyone showing up?

Got a few more upgrades done. After researching, calling around and what not. It would cost more to get my existing exhaust ceramic coated than to just buy one already done. I went with the dual racing bazooka style. I "had" baffles bolted in... At bout 70 mph they both blew out.. lol Glad no one was behind me... next ones ill have welded in I guess..
Also my pedals where so wore out, I was getting bruises from pulling the clutch pedal back with the top of my foot.. I upgraded to Hydraulic. I must say, Im very happy with it. Wish Ive done it sooner. Right now Im only running the back brakes due to the fact I havent been able to locate a 4 way "T" localy. If I upgrade to disk brakes, will the rear tires be efficient enough?? The buggy is extreamly light. Been running around town with it for 3 days now with just the rear drum brakes and its iffy.....I think though thats due to the fronts mostly doing the work and the rears havent been used in a while. Im gunna check that out tommorow.

any insite to this is much appreciated..

Thanks,

Well Ive been kicking around the idea of painting the buggy using Herculiner..Mainly the front and anywhere prone to bug/rock paint damage. After using it already on my floors, which at first were flimsly and flex to much..Now is soild, I knew this was the way to go. After 4hrs of prep and sanding, I spent the rest of the day laying 4 coats on the buggys front fiberglass cover, and the top. MAN... the front cover now feels like I can throw it off a bridge and not even faze it.
This stuff should last years, AS long as you prep right..
