First Buggy MadMax

Postby jking2100 » 22 Tue Sep, 2009 3:09 pm

This buggy was originally built by my Aunt's Father, and most recently modified by my Uncle. It is in rough shape visually but mechanically sound. I will be picking it up in October from Michigan and towing it home to Fort Worth. Here are the current Specifications:

1641DP
044 Magnum Heads
Dual Dellorto 40s
Swing Arm Trans
BJ Beam
Recent Roll Cage and new aluminum pans
Homemade spoiler with integrated oil cooler

My To Do List:
Pull Body, Sand and Primer
Replace Tires
Rebuild Carbs and possibly go from the Dual Dellortos to a single Dellorto
Relocate tank from back seat (5G Cylinder Style) to under deck (Original Style)
Fix Turn Indicators

body type

Postby jking2100 » 23 Wed Sep, 2009 10:11 am

I have heard from guys on The Samba it is a Safari Trail Style body.

http://www.dunebuggyarchives.com/decision-tree/leafs/BuggyId/?first=s

My uncle says it is a Manx but I cannot confirm it until I pick it up in October.

As far as the Duals, do you think it will run ok on the street, I plan to do a lot of driving with it. I just do not want to have to run high RPMs to stay in the powerband is all. I will say this is my first VW so any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again

Its not a Manx. Hood is wrong, rear end is wrong.

I think Safari Trail is correct.

Dual 40 dellorto Streetability

Postby jking2100 » 23 Wed Sep, 2009 2:21 pm

Have you changed any of the jets at all? I know the dellortos are complete stock. My uncle recommended I possible move a jet size or 2. What are your opinions on messing with the factory specs?

I do not know the rocker size either, knowing my uncle they are probably 1.25 or 1.4, if they are not I will be moving up to 1.4 with appropriate pushrods as soon as possible.

Thanks

I think you need some taller air cleaners...

Duals are great... I've run Dellorto's before (just sold them) and am waiting on a new set of Webers for my sedan.

If its been sitting, I'd bet on at least a new gasket kit for them, and a good cleaning. There are a couple of places that you can send dells and webers to that can completely rebuild them back to factor specs if they really give you troubles. This is not your run of the mill rebuilds either, I'm talking brand new looking, ultrasonic cleaned, all brash polished, and functionally good as new type rebuilds.

Well, she is in Texas! Flat towing was not to terrible until I lost an axle nut on the drivers side. Never lost the tire but I did chew up the threads. Luckily a mechanics shop just south of Oklahoma City hooked me up with a new one and impacted it on.

Got it home and had to test it out, so I bought a battery and new oil filter, changed the oil and rinsed the tank out.

I let the electric fuel pump prime a bit and she fired right up. Holy pshaw is this baby loud!

BTW, the huge air cleaners are for the 6" velocity stacks hidden underneath. I thought they were just air cleaners at first until I tried to remove them and couldn't. I have to remove the wing to take the air cleaners off.

To do list:
1. Check and rebuild Axels with new bearings and possibly new axels ( I have a new set)
2. Find leak in hydraulic clutch master cylinder
3. Give the brakes a thorough once over to include new shoes and turning the rotors and replacing wheel cylinders
4. Fix oil leak
5. Drive it!

Yeah flat towing was an experience. Especially 1300 miles of it. The most disturbing is slow turns. The tow bar catches then slams really hard as it slides along the beam. First time it did I about soiled my drawers.

I thought about removing it myself. I can only imagine how loud she is without that in there. I might try it this weekend. I will be taking Pix this weekend and maybe a video too.
