Mook's Buggy Build

Postby Mook » 04 Sat Jul, 2009 3:51 pm

I picked this up in crosby about a month ago.
I thought it was a sand winder, but when I took the hood off I found out that it was an Astro-Car.
The only difference I can find between an Astro-car and a sandwinder is the tail section, mine has a rounded cut-out and the sandwinder has a square cutout.
also you will notice the very unique sidepods, At first I wasnt wild about them, but I am considering keeping them.

These are some pics I took a couple of days ago.

my goal is to have the body off within the next week and start the chassis work.
Ill keep ya updated

COOL! Not many buggy builders bothered to attach id tags, they sure help clear up confusion all these years later.
Looking forward to your progress pics.

Looks good Ian. Nice project. I'll try and get over there one evening to give you a hand. Did that one have a title with it?

I bought it with a title, but am still trying to get the title from the previous owner who said she had to get it from her dad or somthing. not very happy about the situation, but its my own fault for handing over the money and trusting her.
Hopefully she will send it soon.

Pulled the engine today after work, that was even easier than I thought it would be.
I am overwhelmed with what to do next, tomorrow, I plan to get a list of what I need to do together
here you can see the worst of the rust.

That looks like where the battery sat. Mine was the same way. Do yourself a favor and go to Home Depot and buy a quart of Ospho Rust Treatment. If it's not rusted through in places you can save it with Ospho. Just brush it on and it converts the rusty metal back to a solid mass. Ospho has the same consistancy as water. Don't get it on your concrete, it will pit it. When it is dry, clean it with thinner, then paint it. I treated my whole pan and suspension with it. :)

So, did you decide to stay with the swing axle or convert to IRS? Give me a call when you get it stripped I've got the sandblast guy all buttered up to do the pan for you.

Sandblasting is good, then treat it with Ospho so it won't rust while you're waiting for paint. That's what I did. Then I used roll on bedliner. But not everyone does the same thing. That's just a suggestion. :)

I think im going to stay swing axle. I have a great deal on a new tranny from a friend.

I dont need to worry about treating the rust, its all getting cut out, and I am going to basically rebuild the chassis.

Brian, I should have the chassis torn down to the point you can take it by next weekend. I plan to cut out the floorpans tomorow night, and then next week remove the trans, and rear torsion system, and the front suspension.

well, I was gonna do this last night, but got off to a rough start by tearing half my thumbnail off in the first 5 minutes.
So, I got on it this morning, and got those floorpans out!

Image

next step, remove the front end and transmission, then ship it out for sandblasting!

moving right along. slow and steady. :)

well, I am currently rebuilding the front end, its coming along kinda slow, much slower than I intended it to.
waiting on a quote from Texas Air cooled for some of the parts, been like a week now...
Got a title for it today for 75 bucks, its for a 1966 beetle. The title was last signed over in 1975, doesn't look like a modern title, definitely old school.

yeah Brian, I finally got a truck, so I need to sell my car before I will have any money to work on the buggy. Things have kinda been at a standstill, as projects often do. As soon as I sell my Mazda, Its full steam ahead.
I'm tempted to take it to car max and take the hit for getting a little less for it just so I can get it sold.

As far as my co-workers buggy, he has kinda left the body the way it was, and is currently converting it to off-road. I guess the streets weren't exiting enough for him.

HUGE UPDATE:
for me at least.
Sold my car today, Paid off my truck and now I have about $3000 to put into my buggy, I estimate that that will cover pretty much everything except the paint. This week I will be ordering a butload of stuff. Wheels, Tires, seats, wiring, cables, pedals, ect.
I also need to look for a running engine.
its time to get this project rolling.
Brian, I am gonna need to get that column from you.
WHOOO Im ready to go!

Got a load from moore parts today
Image
the close box is the disc brake conversion, and the further box is full of all sorts of goodies.
Got the seats in today from summit as well as the covers they are sitting in the garage right now.
The wheels are on back order, but were shipped today, and the tires are in the guest bedroom waiting for the wheels to be here and then painted.
Found a complete 1600cc in humble and am going to pick it up on saturday.
this weekends project is to get the seat rails fabricated, so that I can paint the chassis, and get it ready to start assembling
lots going on, just wish it was warmer outside and sunlight a little later.

getting the seat rails together. made from angle iron mostly. much more complicated than I thought they would originally be to build.
They put the bottom of the seat just 1 inch from the floor pan which is already about 1 inch lower than a stock floor pan. Good for me because I am tall.
worked on them today untill my drill ran out of batteries. I am 100% sure the seat rails will be done this week. then on to bigger things.

I got a little sidetracked from the seat rails last week, but they are done now. Ready to weld in.
had a buddy come over and help me with painting my wheels black. They will probably get an orange pinstripe around the rim once the body is painted.

Brian came over today and helped me out a bunch.
Got the seat rails mocked up then welded in.
Body is back in the backyard though. Flipped the chassis over for maybe the last time. and Used some spray on bedliner.
Should flip it back this week and paint the top. then onto the front end assembly.
also wirewheeled the transmission and got "most" of the dirt and gunk off of it and just painted it primer grey. it will probably stay that way.

Thank you so much BrianB for your help.

well many of my posts got deleted so I guess I will have a post that shows everything that is missing soon.
Just got the body back from the fiberglass guy, he had it less than a week. Its ready for primer and soon paint.
on the chassis, I have bled the brakes, run all my cables and what not and will probably be installing my engine very soon.
once again money is the only thing slowing me down. due to financial restraints I dont think that I will be making buggy blast this year, but it wont be long after that It will be ready to roll.

Getting the body back from the paint booth was one of the best parts of the build. I second that about doing everything you can while the body is off, Fuel and brake lines, steering stuff, etc etc
